Most believers I talk to wrestle with deep, unmentionable questions about their faith.  They have silently and shamefully accepted massive contradictions about the culturally assumed gospel in the hopes that no one will notice, particularly themselves.  They, with much effort, put on a brave face, attend their church of choice, read their devotional material of preference and soldier on, in the hopes that the so-called mysteries with which they struggle will be resolved on eternity’s white shores. 

This is a great tragedy.

I have been spending the last 4 months with a committed group of 12-15 folks who are working through the Gospel of Mark as a committed spiritual practice intended to open us up to the transformational work of Jesus.  This effort has been rich and multi-dimensional and reminiscent of similar journeys I have taken through this exact text with other groups in the past.  At certain points in the journey I will take a moment and consider the implications of Jesus' actions and Mark's explanation of them.

Sorry I Broke Stuff.

In our MadeNew Bible study on Sunday mornings we've been working our way through the Gospel of Mark.  The Jesus of Mark's Gospel is sort of a rage lunatic life wrecker type and I think that's why I keep going back.  No one gets what they want from this Jesus, but everyone gets what they need.  People love to focus on Jesus' infuriation of the religiously powerful, but this isn't the half of it.  It isn't just the Pharisees that are caught in his deer hunter target sights.  It's everybody. 

Nobody gets away from Jesus and gets to stay the same.
